National Champions: MUST takes home millions from BoU

Last year, from December 3, 2023 to December 15,2023,  the Vision group held a National Ultimate University Quiz, sponsored by Bank of Uganda, Centenary Bank, and other partners. These saw 16 public and private Ugandan universities battling it out in a test of knowledge. The competition covered a vast array of topics, from history and politics to science, current affairs, and even pop culture, including music, art, and Greek mythology. Universities faced off in a single-elimination format, ensuring a fast-paced and exciting competition.

Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) emerged victorious, taking home a grand prize of 25 million Ugandan shillings for the university itself. Additionally, each participating student and coach received a laptop and a personal reward of 1 million Ugandan shillings.

The items included: workstation for 2 with chairs,1 office desk and chair,1 HP Envy Laptop,2 laptop bags,1 All in one desktop computer,1 Colour Printer (Colour Laser jet enterprise M5s3),1 External hard drive – 1 terabyte,1 Projector,1 Samsung phone.

Vision Group, the event’s organizer, went above and beyond by procuring 25 million shillings worth of cutting-edge equipment and furniture for MUST. Ms. Angella Nakato Muyingo, the university’s Public Relations Officer, who was also the team’s coach, expressed her sincere gratitude to the organizers. She particularly commended Mr. Maxwell and  Ms. Sarah from the Vision group  procurement department for prioritizing quality and securing top-notch equipment that perfectly aligns with S&T.  Ms. Muyingo further highlighted that Bank of Uganda’s trust in the organizers was well-placed, specifically mentioning the leadership of Deputy Governor Mr. Michael Atingi-Ego. She credited  BoU for investing in education challenging scholars to think beyond their fields of specialization through the quiz. She added that this fostered a renewed sense of collaboration among Ugandan universities. The winning MUST team comprised four brilliant students:

  • Ahirirwe Leticia, a fourth-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Livelihoods within the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies.
  • Edgar Reagan Ssenyonga, a fourth-year student enrolled in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery program at the Faculty of Medicine.
  • Atukwaase Vitah, a third-year student diligently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences.
  • Silver Evans Makanga, a dedicated fifth-year student enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine’s Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery program.

The mastermind behind this successful team was Ms. Angella Nakato Muyingo, who served as the lead coach. Mr. Solomon Agum, the Principal Assistant Academic Registrar responsible for Admissions, Records, and Alumni Engagement, played a crucial role in team selection and served as the team’s dedicated researcher. Additionally, H.E. Musa Kiyemba, the Guild President, provided valuable assistance during the team selection process.

Mbarara University of Science and Technology’s victory in the Ultimate University Quiz is a testament to the university’s commitment to academic excellence and its students’ intellectual prowess. The competition not only provided a platform for showcasing knowledge but also fostered a spirit of healthy competition and collaboration among Ugandan universities.
