The Ophthalmology Department to make a difference in Kigezi Region

The department of Ophthalmology in collaboration with the Lions Club of Mbarara launched the Lions Comprehensive Eye Care Project for Kigezi at Cephas Inn Kabale on 14th Dec 2020.

It is a three year project, worth  half a million dollar  aimed at supporting  6 district hospitals in the Kigezi region to provide comprehensive eye care services to the population including cataract and glaucoma surgery supported by an outreach team from Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

It is supported by the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) and the Latter-Day Saints Charities (LDS).

The Official launch was attended by the National Eye Health Coordinator from the Ministry of Health, Lions District Governor 411B, Hospital Directors of Nyakibare, Mutorele, Rugarama, Kisiizi, Bwindi and Rugyeyo hospitals, the District Health Officers of the six districts in Kigezi region, several eye health workers and Lions Clubs members.

February 4 2021, The department started training in line with the project and hope to officially start implementation in May 2021.
