Prof. Pauline Byakika Kibwika Inaugurated as MUST’s 3rd Vice Chancellor

On October 24th, 2024, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) ushered in a new era with the inauguration of Prof. Pauline Byakika Kibwika as its third Vice Chancellor. The event, held at the Kihumuro Main Campus, was a colorful occasion graced by distinguished guests, including government officials, academic leaders, faculty, staff, and students.

The Chief Guest was Hon. Minister of State for Higher Education Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, representing Hon. Minister of Education and Sports Mama Janet Kataaha Museveni. Another distinguished guest was Hon. Minister Dr. Monica Musenero, Minister for Science, Technology, and Innovations.

The Chancellor of Bishop Stuart University, the Right Reverend Associate Prof. Fred Sheldon Mwesigwa, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, the Vice Chancellor of Saint Joseph University Mbarara, Rev. Fr. Dr. Deus Karemire, and the Vice Chancellor of Bishop Stuart University, Prof. John Mugisha, were among the notable academic leaders present.

Prof. Byakika succeeds Prof. Celestino Obua, who himself succeeded the founding Vice Chancellor, Prof. F.I.B Kayanja. The inauguration ceremony was a celebration of academic excellence and a testament to MUST’s commitment to quality higher education.
The citation of the new Vice Chancellor was eloquently read by Dr. Gertrude Nakiwala Kiwanuka, an Associate Professor of Biochemistry and former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

The ceremony was presided over by the Chancellor of MUST, Prof. Charles Lwanga Mark Olweny, who handed over the instruments of power to Prof. Byakika, granting her full authority as the CEO of MUST.
The newly appointed Vice Chancellor took the oaths of allegiance, official, and secrecy, reaffirming her commitment to serving MUST with dedication and diligence. This was conducted by Her Worship Grace Atwongirwe, the Deputy Registrar of Mbarara High Court, assisted by the university’s legal officer, Timothy Mugumya (Esq).

During the speeches, all speakers pledged their support to Prof. Byakika and expressed confidence in her ability to lead MUST to greater heights. The students, faculty, and staff of MUST warmly welcomed Prof. Byakika, showcasing their enthusiasm through a vibrant skit performance that highlighted the diverse faculties of the university.

The NUEI MUST chapter presented an official portrait of the Vice Chancellor, symbolizing her legacy. The international students added a global touch, waving the flags of their respective countries.

With her extensive experience and leadership qualities, Prof. Pauline Byakika Kibwika is poised to steer MUST towards new horizons of academic excellence and innovation. The university community eagerly anticipates her visionary leadership and looks forward to a prosperous future under her guidance.
