NEMA:National University

The National University Quiz organized by Vision group and sponsored by Bank of Uganda, another category was introduced by  NEMA Team. This was  a significant event that brought together students from various universities to showcase their knowledge on critical environmental issues, particularly focusing on the ozone layer and related regulations. The quiz featured multiple categories, each designed to test participants’ understanding of international agreements and national laws regarding ozone depletion.

Quiz Categories for round one:

The categories included:

  1. Vienna Convention (1985)
  2. Montreal Protocol (1987)
  3. London Amendment (1990)
  4. Copenhagen Amendment (1992)
  5. Beijing Amendment (1999)
  6. Montreal Amendment (1997)
  7. Kigali Amendment (2016)
  8. National Environment Act, 2019
  9. National Environment (Management of Ozone Depleting Substances and Products) Regulations, 2020
  10. Ozone and Ozone Layer

These topics not only highlighted the historical context of ozone protection but also emphasized the ongoing efforts to manage and mitigate ozone-depleting substances.

Participating Candidates

Among the many bright minds, the following candidates represented their universities:

  • Ayebare Gillian– PEEM II (Female)
  • Abigaba Godwin– BS II (Male)
  • Enock Kamwesigye– BS II (Male)

Performance Highlights

  • Female Team: Ayebare Gillian made an impressive run, advancing to the quarter-finals, showcasing her extensive knowledge of the quiz topics. She scored 90% in the first category. She proceeded to the quarter finals where she scored 57% ranking 4th in the competition
  • Male Team: Despite a strong effort, Abigaba Godwin and Enock Kamwesigye were knocked out in the first round, scoring 70%. Their performance was commendable, reflecting their understanding of the subject matter.

Conclusion

The National University Quiz was not only a platform for competition but also an opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of environmental issues. The event fostered a spirit of collaboration and learning, encouraging participants to engage with crucial topics like the protection of the ozone layer and the significance of international agreements in environmental conservation.
