Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) has taken a firm stance against examination malpractice, a practice that undermines the institution’s commitment to academic integrity. In line with the University’s vision of being a center of academic and professional excellence, MUST strives to maintain the highest standards of education and research.
On August 14, 2024, the Examination Irregularities Committee convened its 27th meeting to investigate cases of malpractice that occurred during the end-of-semester two examinations held from May 21 to June 5, 2024.
A total of 24 students were implicated in various examination irregularities. The majority (23) were caught with unauthorized materials, including mobile phones and written materials. One student was found to have entered the examination room with an invalid examination card.
Of the 24 students, 21 faced the committee to defend themselves. However, three students failed to appear and will be given another opportunity to do so.
The committee deliberated on each case and reached the following resolutions:
- Discontinuation: Four students were discontinued due to unsatisfactory defenses.
- Caution: One student was cautioned against writing on the examination permit.
- Examination Cancellation: A student who presented a forged examination permit had their examinations canceled and will have to retake them in the future.
- Suspension: Fifteen students were suspended for a period of one year.
The chairperson of the Examination Irregularities Committee and the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs, Prof. Nixon Kamukama, urged all students to avoid examination malpractice. He emphasized the negative consequences of cheating, including emotional stress for the victim, financial burden on parents or sponsors, and damage to one’s reputation.
MUST’s commitment to addressing examination malpractice is a testament to its dedication to maintaining a fair and equitable learning environment. By taking decisive action against those who engage in such behavior, the university aims to promote academic integrity and uphold its reputation as a center of excellence.
