MUST Celebrates Sign Language Graduation and Disability Awareness!

Madam Stella Dusabe the coordinator of PWDs

“Every challenge is an opportunity in disguise. Embrace your unique journey and let your determination soar.” on November 28, 2024,  Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) proudly celebrated a major milestone – the graduation of its first cohort of sign language trainees! This memorable occasion coincides perfectly with Disability and Special Needs Awareness Day, making it a double celebration of inclusion and achievement.

The intensive sign language course was attended by a diverse group of participants, including staff, students, and key stakeholders with a keen interest in disability rights and inclusive communication. This diverse representation underscored the growing recognition of the importance of sign language in fostering a more inclusive society.

The ceremony was graced by inspiring speeches from various dignitaries. Ms. Stella Dusabe, Coordinator for PWDs in the Dean of Students’ office, emphasized the program’s significance in fostering a more inclusive MUST community. She also announced plans to expand the training to even more members of the university.

She further encouraged students to live by example, inspiring those in denial to open up, especially those who became impaired secondarily through diseases, accidents, or other causes. She concluded with a motivational statement as,: “Your disability is not your identity, it’s a part of your story. Let your abilities shine brighter than any limitation.”

  • Eng. Anke Weisheit, the event’s keynote speaker, delivered a powerful message on effective communication with the Deaf community. Her speech emphasized the importance of inclusivity and understanding in creating strong connections between hearing and Deaf individuals.

Representatives from the Uganda National Association of the Deaf (UNAD) also shared their perspectives. Betty Kyogabirwe stressed the ongoing challenges of accessibility despite the focus on inclusion. She highlighted ways to ensure continued practice and retention of the graduates’ sign language skills.

Mr. Julius Mutagubya from UNAD’s Mbarara branch commended the students’ dedication and the overwhelmingly positive feedback on the training program. He further encouraged MUST to consider offering sign language as a formal course and expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts that made the program a success.
