Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) stands out as a champion of inclusive education, advocating for the rights and needs of all students, particularly those with disabilities. Celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities
On November 28, 2024, MUST commemorated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, aligning with the global theme: “United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for, with, and by persons with disabilities.” This celebration was brought forward due to the coincided with examination on December 1, 2024 said me. According to Mr. Emmanuel Kyagaba, the day was marked by the successful completion of a sign language class attended by 38 participants, including students, staff, nearby institution attendees, and even a local housewife.

He suggested several actions to achieve this, including reviewing and updating accessibility policies, providing training for faculty and staff, collaborating with student organizations, and promoting awareness campaigns.

Mr. Abdullah Kawooya, President of the PWDs Association at MUST, highlighted the significance of the day, stating that it underscores the need for inclusivity and equity for people with disabilities. He noted that the SDGs aim to address the unique challenges faced by this group, such as limited access to education, employment, and healthcare.

By collaborating and involving individuals with disabilities in these efforts, a more inclusive and sustainable future can be achieved.
‘The International Day of People with Disabilities highlights the importance of inclusivity, equity, and diversity, urging collective efforts to eliminate barriers and create opportunities for everyone. This year’s theme reflects on the challenges faced as the world evolves, including poverty, inequality, environmental issues, and limited access to education and healthcare, which disproportionately affect low- and middle-income countries”.
He added that “The SDGs specifically target these challenges, with Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) promoting inclusive education and equitable job opportunities. Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities) aims to tackle disparities faced by people with disabilities, focusing on issues like healthcare access, communication tools, and societal awareness”.

Ms. Stella Dusabe, the Coordinator of People with Disabilities and Council Representative at MUST, reaffirmed the university’s dedication to creating an inclusive environment. She emphasized the importance of sign language as both a communication tool and a means to foster social integration.
Acknowledgments and Future Endeavors
Stella also recognized CyberSchool Technology Solutions for their sponsorship of the online sign language course, which has expanded the reach of this vital program. The university’s physical sign language training, organized by the People with Disabilities Association in collaboration with the Dean of Students Office, further promotes awareness and skill development and the University administration for always supporting the PWDs activities.
