Leadership and Management Skills enhancement in the Faculty of Medicine.

On 20th July 2022, the office of the Dean Faculty of Medicine organized a training session for all its heads of departments, administrators, committee chairpersons and their deputies where they were equipped with leadership and management skills. The facilitator of the day was former staff of MUST and Vice Chancellor of Uganda Martyrs University Prof: Patrick Kyamanywa.

According to Dr. Joseph Ngonzi, the Dean Faculty of Medicine (FoM) the training was a landmark in the medical school because people need more training sessions in addition to what they get in their areas of expertise. He recognized the HoDs and other team members for their dedication towards serving and building the medical school which is the heart of the university (MUST). He added that with the support from Management this will be held annually to boost performance in the faculty and entire Faculty of Medicine.

The training was opened by the Vice chancellor Prof. Celestino Obua, who thanked the leaders for their resilience towards work. He particularly thanked the Dean Faculty of Medicine   Dr. Joseph Ngonzi for the well thought about event.  “Thank you for coming up with such an innovative idea of training the staff members on how to run their offices. Its only through trainings like this where people are prepared to become HoDs, Deans, Vice Chancellors among other positions”. Said Prof. Obua.

Prof. Obua added that every leader needs to upskill his or her Leadership and Management skills. He added that management training can advance one’s career by equipping you with the right knowledge to make the right decisions, influence positive change around you besides enhancing their performance management. in the long run grooms, someone into making a better employee. Thus, a win- win situation for the organization and personal career development. According to Prof. Obua, the training provided a take home assignment for the leaders to grow their leadership skills and the role attached to various leadership positions.

He concluded by thanking Prof. Kyamanywa for accepting to comeback to MUST and share his leadership and management experience to others.

During his practical facilitation, Prof. Kyamanywa gave insights about leadership types/styles, teambuilding, change of leadership, motivating and influencing effectively. He further tasked the leaders to be committed, accountable, honesty, trustworthy for better service delivery.

The Faculty of Medicine was among pioneer students in the Faculty Medicine at MUST that started with 43 students in 1989. The faculty was built on the philosophy of community based education research services and competency based curriculum for training health professionals.
