In the heart of southwestern Uganda, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) proudly hosted a regional conference focused on science, technology, and innovation, led by the esteemed Honorable Dr. Monica Musenero. This significant event aimed to engage stakeholders in the ever-evolving fields of science and technology, fostering collaboration and innovation. The minister was welcomed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, Prof. Nixon Kamukama. He welcomed the minister to his office and later led her to the boardroom for more engagements.
Day 1: A Tour of STI-Funded Projects
The conference commenced with an inspiring tour of various STI-funded projects at MUST. Venture leaders showcased their groundbreaking work:
Associate Professor Joel Bazira presented findings on pathogen epidemiological studies, focusing on antimicrobial resistance modeling and PCR development.
- Dr. Joseph Oloro discussed the efficacy of biobased polyphenols and mineral supplements extracted from Eucalyptus grandis woods.
- Dr. Denis Bbosa shared insights on recycling plastic waste into interlocking blocks.



These presentations highlighted not only the progress of the projects but also the accountability and ambitious end goals that each venture aimed to achieve.
During the conference, Minister Musenero emphasized the importance of leveraging knowledge. She passionately urged attendees, “Knowledge is your access; leverage it now while you are strong so that you enjoy the future. Leave a legacy; it should not die with you. Build your knowledge empire now while strong to allow it to take care of you when you are retired.”


The day concluded successfully under the guidance of Prof. Nixon Kamukama, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, setting the stage for the second day of the conference.

Day 2: Laboratory Tours and Engaging Discussions
Day two began with Minister Musenero touring the laboratories where venture leaders conducted their research. Each leader shared a SWOT analysis of their respective laboratories, providing valuable insights into their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Pauline Byakika-Kibwika, led the day’s activities. She made a courteous call to the Vice Chancellor’s office, sharing insights about MUST’s future plans and suggestions for improvement. The Minister then toured stalls showcasing various innovations from students, staff, and stakeholders, highlighting the vibrant ecosystem of creativity and entrepreneurship at MUST.
In the conference hall, Prof. Byakika-Kibwika expressed gratitude to Minister Musenero for choosing MUST as the venue for this pivotal conference. She acknowledged that the day marked her 100th day as Vice Chancellor, expressing, “Honorable Minister, I cannot take it for granted that during my installation you were present, and today you are here again. I am humbled and blessed to have you.”
She urged the MUST faculty and staff to collaborate in building a better institution, recognizing the contributions of previous leaders like Prof. Fredrick Kayanja and Prof. Celestino Obua. Prof. Byakika-Kibwika also thanked the Ugandan government, led by H.E Y.K Museveni, for its visionary leadership and support for MUST.
Minister Musenero delivered a keynote address outlining the STI-OP’s strategic direction and its potential contribution to the nation’s economic leap by 2040.
Group Discussions and Presentations
Following her address, group discussions on the STI agenda for western Uganda took place, leading to presentations on the status of STI initiatives in the region. Key presentations included:

- Status of STI at Kabale University
- Status of STI at Mountains of the Moon University
The conference concluded with closing remarks from the Honorable Minister, reinforcing the commitment to advancing science and technology in Uganda.
