MUST-IUC UCoBS Project Guest Lecture

  • February 9, 2024 - 2:30pm
  • Mbarara University of Science and Technology, UCoBS Board Room

Seminar on the importance of silicon in aquatic ecology at Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

This seminar delves into the often-overlooked role of silicon in aquatic ecosystems, shedding light on its pivotal importance and downstream transformations. Silicon, traditionally overshadowed by more conspicuous elements, emerges as a critical player in shaping the ecological dynamics. The presentation explores the diverse sources of silicon input into rivers, examining its intricate journey from upstream origins to downstream transformations and receiving lakes and estuaries. Attendees will gain insights into the pivotal role silicon plays in fostering the growth of diatoms, influencing the entire aquatic food web, and steering the Earth’s climate.

Adding a unique dimension to the discussion, the seminar highlights the role of hippos in the silicon cycle. The research underscores how these keystone herbivores contribute significantly to silicon dynamics through their feeding habits and subsequent nutrient deposition. The presentation delves into the broader implications of hippos on river ecology, emphasizing their role in shaping silicon availability in freshwater ecosystems.
