Dr Jonans Tusiimire elected as Vice President of the Commonwealth Pharmacists Association.

The Commonwealth Pharmacists Association (CPA) Regional Assembly elected Dr Jonans Tusiimire as vice president for the next two years. Dr Tusiimire, the Deputy Dean Faculty of Medicine and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacy at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, is the representative for the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU) at the CPA and thus a member of the CPA Council.

Prior to his election as Vice President, he had also been successfully nominated as a Regional Representative to the CPA Regional Assembly by the National Pharmacy Associations within the East and Southern Africa region. The CPA works in six regions: the Americas, Europe, West Africa, Eastern and Southern Africa, and the Pacific.

Established in 1969, the Commonwealth Pharmacists Association (CPA) is the professional body for national pharmacy associations in Commonwealth countries. The body is mainly concerned with advancing health and education for the public benefit through empowering pharmacists at all levels to improve health and wellbeing throughout the Commonwealth.

Accordingly, the three strategic objectives of the CPA are:

  • To develop pharmacy workforce and build capacity through education and training
  • To support pharmacists to strengthen healthcare systems through the safe and effective USE of medicines, prevention of disease and promotion of healthier lifestyles
  • To advocate for improved ACCESS and QUALITY of medicines and vaccines, embedding pharmacists at all levels of medicines management

Dr Tusiimire Jonans will be formally announced at a CPA Council Meeting to be held during the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Congress in Seville, Spain on 20th September 2022.
