Mbarara University of Science and Technology is proud to announce the first RO1 PRIMED AT MUST. The 5-year award is titled “Integration of a patient-centered health intervention (Support-Moms) into routine antenatal care to improve maternal health in Uganda”
The Principal Investigator/ Project Director is Dr. Esther Cathyln Atukunda from the Faculty of Medicine, MUST.
This 5 year Grant worth over 3 million USD, builds on Dr. Atukunda’s K43 work that she developed over the last 5 years under the mentorship of Prof Obua, Dr. Mugyenyi, Profs. Jessica Haberer (MGH/Harvard), Mark Siedner ( MGH/Harvard) and Lynn Matthews (UAB).
It is the 2nd PRIME R01 grant ever in Uganda, and the FIRST PRIME RO1 at MUST, awarded at first attempt, with an excellent score of 10 ( percentile score of 1.0%)

Who is Esther C Atukunda?
Dr. Esther C Atukunda, PhD is a Pharmaco-epidemiologist and Senior Lecturer in department of Pharmacy at Mbarara University of Science and Technology. She has been invested in investigating alternative user centred, appropriate medicine and intervention use in low resource settings, utilizing observation studies, surveys, modelling cost-effectiveness and randomised controlled trials over the last 10 years in Uganda. She is a proud recipient of a CFAR, and a K43 award (K43TW011004) among others, focused on developing and testing a novel intervention using mHealth technology and social support to support women to access maternity care and improve maternal-child health outcomes, for which the current grant is premised. She also supports & supervises work of several MSc/MMed and PhD students in Uganda on medicine access, adherence, maternal health and health service utilization.
