Courtesy Call to the Hospital Director

On February 3,2025, Prof. Pauline Byakika-Kibwika made a courtesy call to Dr. Deus Twesigye, the Hospital Director of Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital. This visit was marked by a warm exchange of gratitude and acknowledgment of the collaborative relationship between the university and the hospital.

Dr. Twesigye expressed his sincere appreciation for Prof. Byakika’s humble gesture in visiting his office. He highlighted the critical role that the university plays in the hospital’s operations, noting that a significant percentage of the doctors at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital are  from the university. He emphasized that without the teaching doctors, the hospital would struggle to function effectively, underscoring the symbiotic relationship between the two institutions.

Prof. Byakika shared ideas for improving the pertinence of hospital services, including how to tap into funds. She also raised concerns about the outstanding issue of the hospital’s mortuary services and proposed further discussions involving other stakeholders, including government leaders and policymakers. He invited Dr. Twesigye to collaborate on strategies to enhance hospital services, particularly in this area.

During the discussion, Dr. Twesigye articulated the importance of this partnership for the entire southwestern Uganda region, extending its impact to neighboring countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi. He proudly stated that the services offered at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital are on par with those of a national hospital, serving a diverse population with varying healthcare needs.

An appointment for this crucial meeting was scheduled, aiming to bring together key stakeholders to explore ways to improve healthcare delivery in the region. Prof. Byakika’s visit not only strengthened the ties between the university and the hospital but also set the stage for future collaborations that could significantly benefit the healthcare landscape of southwestern Uganda.

In conclusion, the courtesy call showed  the commitment of both Prof. Byakika and Dr. Twesigye to work together for the betterment of healthcare services in the region, fostering an environment of collaboration and mutual support.
