Today, Uganda commemorates the 39th anniversary of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Liberation Day. The celebrations took place in Mubende District. This significant day marks the historic moment when the NRM, under the leadership of H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, took power in 1986, initiating a transformative journey for the nation.
Prof. Pauline Byakika-Kibwika, Vice Chancellor of MUST, extended her warmest congratulations to H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the first lady Maama Janet Kataaha Museveni, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, civil and religious leaders, and all Ugandans on this momentous occasion. She emphasized the importance of this day in recognizing the sacrifices made by countless Ugandans who fought for freedom and democracy.
Acknowledgment of Leadership: Prof. Byakika praised President Museveni for his unwavering commitment to national development and stability over the past decades. The Vice Chancellor called upon all Ugandans to unite in celebrating the achievements of the NRM and to continue working together towards a prosperous future for the nation. She said, “As a university, we take pride in this day. We have been able to teach generations in an inclusive manner, conduct research to address community challenges, and innovate to solve challenges to impact communities and real lives.” She pointed out some of the benefits below:
- Financial Support: MUST receives government funding for infrastructure, salaries, and research grants.
- Infrastructure Development: Improved facilities and modern technology through government investment, like the recently handed over Faculty of Computing and Informatics block.
- Quality Assurance: Adherence to national standards and accreditation for quality education.
- Collaboration Opportunities: Partnerships with government institutions and international networks.
- Student Support: Lower tuition fees and availability of scholarships and bursaries, including the government-sponsored students, the government loan scheme, and State House scholarships among other scholarships.
- Research and Innovation Support: for relevant research and establishment of innovation hubs to promote science and technology.
- Community Engagement: Involvement in outreach programs and capacity building for local communities, to graduate an all-round student ready to work in any community.
- Enhanced Reputation: Increased recognition nationally and internationally, attracting more students and faculty.
These benefits and more have contributed significantly to MUST’s growth and development as a leading educational institution in Uganda.
The NRM Liberation Day is not only a celebration of past victories but also a moment to reflect on the journey of the nation. Over the past 39 years, Uganda has witnessed significant strides in various sectors, including education, health, and infrastructure. The NRM’s policies have aimed at improving the quality of life for all Ugandans, fostering an environment conducive to growth and development.
As Uganda celebrates this historic day, Prof. Byakika urged all citizens to embrace the values of hard work, dedication, and patriotism.
