ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The minimum requirements for admission to any Undergraduate degree programme are:

  1. Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent with at least 5 passes
  2. Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent with at least 2 principal
  3. Diploma holders must have passed with at least a

The minimum requirements for admission to any Diploma programme are:

  1. Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent with at least 5 passes
  2. Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent with at least 1 principal pass and two subsidiary

Additionally, for international applicants:

  1. Applicants whose first language or medium of instruction is not English, must provide evidence from a recognized English language training institution that they have sufficient command of the English language.
  2. Applicants should have their documents equated by Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) of UCE and UACE documents and Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE) for Diploma and Certificate

SPECIFIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  1. FACULTY OF APPLIED SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY

I. Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering (Duration 4 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes in either Physics, Biology or Mathematics, and at least a subsidiary pass any other A’ Level Subjects

Diploma Entry

Diploma in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Engineering

A Diploma in a relevant Medical Technology

Other Diplomas approved by the University to be equivalent to any of those stated above

II. Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Duration 4 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes in Physics and Mathematics, and at least a subsidiary pass in either Chemistry, Geography, Computer studies, Technical Drawing, Economics or Biology

Diploma Entry

Diploma in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Engineering

Other Diplomas approved by the University to be equivalent to any of those stated above

III. Bachelor    of    Science    in    Petroleum Engineering     and            Environmental Management (Duration 4 years)

Any relevant Diploma in Engineering

Mature Entry

Must be 25 years and above and fulfill the Mature Age Entry Scheme requirements of Mbarara University of Science and Technology

V. Bachelor of Science in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (Duration 4 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes in Mathematics and Physics and at least a subsidiary pass in Chemistry, Economics, Geography, Technical Drawing, Computer Studies

Diploma Entry

Diploma in Mechanical Engineering

Any other diploma that has both Mathematics and Physics as core components,

B. FACULTY OF BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES

  1. Bachelor of Business Administration (Duration 3 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes at A’level with at least one being either in Economics Entrepreneurship or Mathematics

Diploma Entry

Hold UDBS or ODBS or HFM Diploma recognized by the University or must have completed at least level one of CPA, ACCA, or CIMA

II. Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance (Duration 3 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes at A’level with at least one being either in Economics or Mathematics and a credit in Mathematics at UCE or Subsidiary Mathematics at A’level

Diploma Entry

Hold UDBS or ODBS or HFM Diploma recognized by the University or must have completed at least level one of CPA, ACCA, or CIMA

III. Bachelor of Science in Procurement and Supply Chain Management (Duration 3 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes in any A’level subjects

Diploma Entry

Hold a Diploma in Business related field with a Credit score from a recognized institution

C. FACULTY OF COMPUTING AND INFORMATICS

  1. Bachelor of Science Computer Science (Duration 3 years)

Direct Entry

Two Principal Passes one of which MUST be in Mathematics and the other in any of the following subjects:- Physics, Chemistry, Economics and/or Entrepreneurship

Diploma Entry

Diploma in any related field

II. Bachelor of Information Technology (Duration 3 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes in any ‘A’ level subjects and a credit in Mathematics at ‘O’ level (UCE) or Subsidiary Mathematics at A’ level

Diploma Entry

Diploma in any ICT field

Holders of CCNA must have certificate of completion of all four levels

III. Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering (Duration 4 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes at A’level with one being in Mathematics and the other in any other A’level subject

A credit in Mathematics at ‘O’ level (UCE)

Diploma Entry

Hold a Diploma in a related field

Mature Entry

Must be 25 years and above and fulfill the Mature Age Entry Scheme requirements of Mbarara University of Science and Technology

D. FACULTY OF INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

  1. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Livelihoods (Duration 4 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes at UACE or its equivalent with one being in the following subjects: Agriculture, Foods and Nutrition, Biology or Chemistry and at least a subsidiary pass in any other A’ Level subject

Diploma Entry

Diploma in any Agricultural related field

II. Bachelor of Science in Gender and Applied Women Health (Duration 3 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes at A’level

Diploma Entry

Diploma in any relevant field

III. Bachelor of Science in Planning and Community Development (Duration 3 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes at A’level

Diploma Entry

Diploma in any relevant field

E. FACULTY OF MEDICINE

  1. Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (Duration 4 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes in Biology and Chemistry and at least Subsidiary Pass in either Physics or Mathematics

Diploma Entry

Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution.

Registered with Allied Health Professionals’ Council

Submit two reference reports one from current employer(s) and the other from the institution where the Diploma training was done.

Sit and pass an entrance examination consisting of written papers in Clinical Chemistry, Haematology & Blood Transfusion, Histopathology, Microbiology, and Parasitology.

II. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Duration 5 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes in Biology and Chemistry and at least Subsidiary Pass in either Physics or Mathematics

Diploma Entry

Diploma in any Bio-medical Sciences.

Be registered by the Allied Health Professionals’ Council or the Uganda Nurses and Midwives’ Council

Preference will be given to those with experience of working under primary health care in a rural setting

The candidates who meet the above criteria will be required to sit and pass for an entrance examination in General Paper, Anatomy, Microbiology, Pharmacology and Physiology

Degree Entry

An honors degree in a bio-medical or biological sciences field

III. Bachelor of Nursing Science (Duration 4 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes in Biology and Chemistry and at least Subsidiary Pass in either Physics or Mathematics

Diploma Entry

Registered Nurses or Midwives or Comprehensive Nurses or Psychiatric Nurses or Paediatric Nurses

Registered or eligible for registration with Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council

Should have passed science subjects especially Mathematics and Chemistry at ‘O’ level Sit and pass an entrance examination in Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology and General Paper

IV. Bachelor of Pharmacy (Duration 4 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes in Biology and Chemistry and at least Subsidiary Pass in either Physics or Mathematics

Diploma Entry

Diploma in Pharmacy.

Should have passed Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and English at O’ Level with at least a credit.

Sit and pass an entrance examination consisting of three written papers in Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Natural products, Introduction to Dispensing and Physiology

V. Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Duration 3 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes, one in Chemistry and the other in any one of Biology, Physics or Mathematics.

Diploma Entry

Diploma in Pharmacy or Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology.

Should have passed Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and English at O’ Level with at least a credit

VI. Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy (Duration 4 years)

Direct Entry

Two principal passes in Biology and one of either Physics or Mathematics

Diploma Entry

Diploma in any one of the following: Occupational Therapy, Orthopaedic Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Orthopaedic Technology, Exercise Science, Nursing or Sports Science. At least a credit in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics at O’ Level or its equivalent

Sit and pass pre-entry exams

V. Bachelor of Science with Education (Physical) (Duration 3 years)

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The minimum requirements for admission to any Postgraduate degree are:

  1. Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent with at least 5 passes
  2. Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent with at least 2 principal
  3. An Honors degree from an accredited degree awarding institution
  4. Candidates who have a Pass degree should have at least a Postgraduate Diploma with at least a credit from an accredited degree awarding
  5. For applicants to clinical programmes;
    1. Have documentary evidence of Internship Training indicating disciplines and
    2. Be registered or eligible for registration with relevant professional bodies such as Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council, Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council,
    3. A current certificate of good standing with the Medical Practitioners’ Council of the country of origin.

Additionally, for international applicants:

  1. Applicants whose first language or medium of instruction is not English, must provide evidence from a recognized English language training institution that they have sufficient command of English language.
  2. Applicants should have their documents verified by
  3. Applicants should have their degree certificate and transcript translated and converted into an equivalent of Ugandan Universities’ CGPA

A degree in Computing, Information Technology, Information Systems, Informatics, Business Studies or a degree in other STEM-related fields from a recognized institution

   2. Postgraduate Diploma in Health Information Technology (Duration 1 years) A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Information Technology/Information Systems/Computer Engineering/Software Engineering or any other computing related field or other STEM-related degree from a recognized higher institution of learning

OR

A bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy and any other health care- related degree from a recognized higher institution of learning

III. Postgraduate Diploma in Information Systems (Duration 1 years)

A degree in Information Systems or Computer Science or Software Engineering or Information Technology or Computer Engineering from a recognized institution

OR

A degree in any other STEM-related field with evidence of having taken acceptable courses in information systems

IV. Masters in Business Informatics (Duration 2 years)

An honors degree in Computing, Information Technology, Information Systems, Informatics, Business Studies or a degree in other STEM-related fields from a recognized institution

OR

A good postgraduate diploma in Computing, Information Technology, Information Systems, Informatics, Business Studies or a degree in other STEM-related fields from a recognized institution

V.   Master of Science in Health Information Technology (Duration 2 years)

An honors degree in health care related field (e.g Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry) or Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Information Technology from a recognized institution

VI. Master of Science in Information Systems (Duration 2 years)

An honors degree in Information Systems or Computer Science or Software Engineering or Information Technology or Computer Engineering or equivalent
