MUST represented at the World Higher Education Conference in Barcelona, Spain

 

UNESCO World Higher Education Conference (WHEC2022) aims at reshaping ideas and practices in higher education to ensure sustainable development for the planet and humanity.

In the view of the global health crisis, UNESCO World Higher Education Conference, initially planned to be held in 2021, took place from 18 to 20 May 2022. The goals and strategic scope of the conference remain, and the new time frame represents an opportunity to deepen and expand our common efforts of knowledge production, policy dialogue, exchange, and networking. UNESCO considers the process of collective construction as the greatest richness of this conference, which aims to become a global conversation nurtured by diverse narratives on higher education.

Mbarara University of Science and Technology participated in the World Higher Education Conference (WHEC) 2022 held in Barcelona, Spain. Dr. Medard Twinamatsiko from the Faculty Interdisciplinary Studies and Deputy Director CITT and Dr. Dorothy Okello -Dean College of Engineering Makerere University and a member of MUST Senate represented Uganda.

Dr. Twinamatsiko was part of a panel of experts during the conference on higher education and higher innovative skills. He articulated a need to link our curriculum implementation and training to the current labour market demands. He revealed the strength MUST has in linking students to the community and industry for exposure.

He further presented on the pathways for Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET)and Higher Education Skills needed by the current Uganda labour market.

Medard is the institutional coordinator for the UNESCO-CFIT project titled “Higher Technical Education for an Innovation and Technical Labour Force. The project aims at strengthening the capacity of MUST to deliver quality education relevant to the labour market.

The conference brought together 2000 expert participants such as Ministers, commissioners, UNESCO executive, World Bank representatives, representatives of OECD, educationists, researchers, donor agencies and private sector across the globe to discuss the future of higher education in Africa.
