A Legacy of Excellence: MUST Honors Outgoing Senators at 106th Sitting

On 26th February, 2026, the 106th Senate Sitting was not only a day for new beginnings but also a poignant moment of gratitude as Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) bid farewell to a cohort of transformational leaders.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Pauline Byakika-Kibwika, took center stage to lead a heartfelt tribute to the outgoing senators, recognizing their years of unwavering dedication and strategic leadership that have shaped the university into a premier institution of higher learning.

In her address, Prof. Byakika-Kibwika emphasized that the current prestige and stability of MUST are direct results of the foundation laid by these leaders.

“MUST is where it is today because of your selfless service,” she remarked. “You have not just held offices; you have carried the spirit of our motto Succeed we MUST in every decision and every challenge you faced. We are forever in your debt for the time and expertise you invested in this community.”

The university recognized a distinguished group of academic and administrative giants who have completed their tenure, celebrating the diverse leadership that has kept the “MUST-spirit” alive across all departments:

  • The Executive Leadership: Special recognition was accorded to the retired Deputy Vice Chancellors, Prof. Nixon Kamukama (Academic Affairs) and Dr. Charles Tushaboomwe-Kazooba, PhD (Finance and Administration). Their strategic oversight and fiscal stewardship have been instrumental in the university’s recent infrastructure and academic expansions.

    Student Welfare & Governance: Mr. Emmanuel Kyagaba, the retired Dean of Students, was thanked for his career-long commitment to student life and for fostering a harmonious, inclusive campus environment.

  • Academic Deans: The Senate celebrated the scholarly leadership of Dr. Fredrick Nsambu Kijjambu, PhD (Outgoing Dean, Faculty of Business and Management Sciences) and Dr. Evarist Nabaasa (Outgoing Dean, Faculty of Computing and Informatics). Under their guidance, their respective faculties saw significant growth in research output and digital innovation.

  • Administrative & Government Support: Heartfelt gratitude was extended to Ms. Maureen Kahima, representing the senior administrators, and Hon. Stephen Tashoobya, the outgoing government representative. Their roles were vital in bridging the university with national policy and ensuring administrative excellence.

  • Staff Representation: Ms. Lydia Nyangoma was honored for her dedicated service representing the intermediate staff, ensuring that every level of the university workforce had a voice in the Senate.

    Recognition in Absentia: The Senate also took a moment to formally recognize those who could not be present but whose contributions remain invaluable:

    • Prof. Philipa Musoke and Dr. Eng. Dorothy Kabagaju (Government Representatives).

    • H.E. Daisy K. Arinda and Mr. Andrew Sewanwa (Student Representatives), who championed the interests of the student body during their term.

Passing the Torch:
As these leaders’ transition to new chapters, the Senate hall was filled with a sense of pride. The outgoing members leave behind a legacy of integrity and academic rigor, ensuring that the “Must-spirit” continues to thrive in the generations of scientists and professionals to come.

The ceremony concluded with a symbolic nod to the future, as the university continues its journey of excellence, standing tall on the shoulders of these remarkable men and women.
