Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) recently held a significant ceremony where its top management and other members took the vital Oaths of Allegiance and Secrecy. The solemn event was presided over by His Worship Henry Twinomuhwezi, the Assistant Registrar of Mbarara High Court.

The proceedings were expertly guided by the University’s Principal Legal Officer, Mr. Timothy Mugumya (Esq), who set the tone by introducing the purpose of the event to the assembled members. Mr. Mugumya then invited the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Pauline Byakika-Kibwika, to formally welcome the High Court Registrar and request him to preside over the swearing-in ceremony. Prof. Byakika-Kibwika further emphasized the importance of these two oaths to the members and the severe repercussions of breaching them.

During his address, His Worship Henry Twinomuhwezi elaborated on the meaning and weight of each oath. He explained that the Oath of Allegiance is a commitment to loyalty to both the University and the nation, fostering a sense of duty and dedication. The Oath of Secrecy, he highlighted, calls for strict confidentiality, especially regarding sensitive information encountered in the course of their duties.
“These are key oaths, and once breached, they call for action following the university’s code of conduct,” stated His Worship Twinomuhwezi. He further stressed that the act of signing the oath document effectively relinquishes the freedom of speaking about confidential matters that have been discussed. He urged all those taking the oath to obey and observe the words said in the oath, recognizing the profound responsibility that comes with their roles.

Following the insightful address, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Pauline Byakika-Kibwika, as the chair of top management, led by example by taking both oaths individually. Subsequently, all other members present participated in a collective group swearing-in, collectively affirming their commitment to uphold the principles of allegiance and secrecy vital to the university’s operations and integrity.
