Succeed We Must

Global Health Community Engagement Field School 2025, A Ugandan-Canadian Collaboration for Transformative Learning

The Global Health Community Engagement Field School 2025 is now underway! This four-week experiential learning program, hosted by the Department of Maternal, Newborn and Child Health at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) in partnership with the University of Calgary (UC), Canada, brings together undergraduate students from both institutions to learn, collaborate, and create meaningful impact in local Ugandan communities.

Now in its fourth time, the Field School emphasizes equity, reciprocity, and community-first approaches in global health. Students work hand-in-hand with secondary school communities to co-develop health promotion initiatives that are locally-driven and strengths-based. Secondary school students are seen not as recipients but as active change-makers in their own health and well-being.

Through this immersive experience, students from Uganda and Canada develop valuable cross-cultural and interdisciplinary skills. Together, they explore how to identify and leverage existing community resources to create sustainable, grassroots solutions—guided by the principle of “use what you have” and must align with line ministry polices and guidelines.

  • Program dates: May 25 – June 20, 2025
  • Academic Presentations: June 19, 2025
  • Community Celebration: June 20, 2025
