A Courteous Call: MUST’s Advocacy for Support

On  Tuesday 25th February 2025, a team from Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) made a significant courtesy call to the Speaker of Parliament, the Right Honourable Anita Amongi. Leading the delegation was the newly appointed Vice Chancellor, Prof. Pauline Byakika-Kibwika, whose presence radiated determination and hope for the future of the university.

The meeting was attended by key figures including  Hon. John Chrysestom Muyingo  the State Minister for Higher Education in the Ugandan Cabinet, Hon. Henry Musasizi Minister of State for Finance, Planning and Economic Development (General Duties)  Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. Other members from MUST included the astute Accounting Officer, Mr. Vincent Kwatampora, the dedicated Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Associate Professor Joseph Ngonzi, and the innovative Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology, Eng. Dr. Johnes Obungoloch

As the discussions unfolded, the representatives from MUST presented the pressing challenges the university faced. Prof. Byakika-Kibiwika highlighted the deteriorating infrastructure, severe staffing shortages, and the crippling impact of budget cuts that threatened the institution’s ability to provide quality education and research.

The atmosphere in the room was charged with concern as the Speaker listened intently. She acknowledged the immense struggles faced by higher education institutions across the nation and expressed her appreciation for the vital contributions MUST had made to the workforce, both in Uganda and beyond.

“You are a cornerstone of our educational landscape,” Speaker Among stated, her voice resonating with sincerity. “Your efforts are crucial for the development of our country.”

In a show of unwavering support, she pledged to advocate for improved funding for higher education, in the country. “I will work closely with the relevant ministries—Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Education and Sports, and Public Service—to ensure that your needs are met,” she declared, her commitment a beacon of hope for the delegation.

Turning to Prof. Byakika-Kibwika, the Speaker congratulated her on her appointment as the Vice Chancellor, recognizing the significance of having a woman in such a pivotal role within the fields of science and technology. “You are an inspiration to many, especially the girl child,” she said warmly. “Your leadership motivates young women to pursue their dreams in today’s world.”

The meeting concluded with a renewed sense of purpose. The MUST team left Parliament feeling that their voices had been heard and their concerns acknowledged. The Speaker’s pledge of support fortified the bridge between the university and Parliament, built on a shared commitment to advancing education and national development.
