A Journey into the Heart of Uganda’s Oil Industry

Mbarara University of Science and Technology’s Faculty of Applied Science and Technology, Department of Petroleum Engineering and Environmental Management, recently embarked on an enriching field visit to Uganda’s burgeoning oil fields. Hosted by the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU), the four-day expedition, from October 17th to 20th, 2024, offered students a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the complexities and grandeur of Uganda’s oil and gas industry.

The itinerary was well-planned to provide a comprehensive overview of the industry’s operations. The group visited the renowned Kingfisher oil field, a dipiction  to Uganda’s growing energy sector. The construction site of Tilenga’s Central Processing Facility (CPF) in Buliisa offered a glimpse into the future of Uganda’s oil production.

A visit to PS1, the starting point of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), underscored the strategic importance of Uganda’s oil resources in the regional context. The group also explored Luwero Industries, a facility dedicated to managing the waste generated from the KFDA project, highlighting the industry’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

The tour concluded with a visit to Kabalega International Airport, a crucial infrastructure project poised to facilitate the transportation of heavy cargo for refinery construction and stimulate economic growth.

Dr. Farad Sagala, a Senior Lecturer in the department and PI of the Higher Education Partnerships in sub-Saharan Africa (HEPSSA), spearheaded the organization of this transformative field trip. The initiative was also generously funded by the HEPSSA project, underscoring the department’s commitment to providing students with practical, real-world experiences.

By bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, this field visit empowered students to gain a deeper understanding of the petroleum engineering and environmental management disciplines. It also fostered invaluable industry connections and inspired future generations of engineers and environmental scientists.
