The 7th Annual Uganda Cancer Color Run

There are over 1500 new cases of cancer in children in Uganda every year.  At Mbarara Pediatric Cancer Unit,  over 150 new cases of cancer in children are registered every year. Whereas cancer treatment at MRRH started in the early 1990s  with the treatment of Buckitts Lymphoma, it was not until May 2017 that the children’s cancer service at MRRH got a home of its own.

This achievement was through the great support of Massachusetts General Hospital and the Global Health Collaborative at MUST. However, the majority of children with cancer still remain undiagnosed, untreated, and die in their homes. We at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, and the Global Health Collaborative (MUST-MGH) are here again to raise awareness about the cancer epidemic in children and to mobilize support in raising this awareness for caring for children with cancer in this region. As a result of previous campaigns, we have started seeing an increase in patients seeking care.

Morethan 517 are now registered in the children’s unit since 2017 to date. 374 new patients were registered in 2019 (since we last had our last color run). This amounts to a 72% increment in caseload in just one year. 14 staff are currently supported to provide the service, plus airtime and a social worker to follow up on lost patients. The facility has also been supported by the Internet to continue doing online mentorship on clinical care of childhood cancers with MGH expert teams on cancer.

The Color Run was initiated in 2015. This year, we are organizing another run (marathon) to continue raising more awareness and funding to manage cancer in children. Through this awareness, MGH has raised over $150,000 over the past five years, contributing significantly to the building of the adult and children cancer wards at MRRH, buying cancer drugs, supporting the unit with staff as well as buying food for the malnourished children, and those with cancer at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.

In tandem with the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI), we contribute to the goal of addressing the increasing burden of cancer in children in Uganda, with the aim to maintain adequate treatment, achieve a cure, provide palliation, and reduce suffering and death. This year’s Cancer Color Run will take place on, July 29th, 2023, starting at Mbarara University Pharmacology Grounds (next to the central police station in Mbarara), taking a 5 KM route.

Due to the increasing needs and numbers of children with cancer in Southwestern Uganda, this year we need more funds to continue buying cancer medicines, diagnosing cancer better and faster, and caring for children while receiving cancer treatment.

We invite individuals, corporate organizations, companies, schools, universities, religious denominations, business communities, charity organizations, and everyone to participate in this year’s Color Run.

What is the Color Run?

We are organizing a Color Run (5-6 km Marathon) to raise awareness and funding for cancer in children from SW Uganda. The Color Run was initiated in 2015 by the Global Health Collaborative at MUST. We have raised over $150,000 over five years, contributing significantly to the building of the adult and children cancer wards, buying cancer drugs as well as buying food for the malnourished children and those with cancer at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
