VC meets FCI: A vision for Innovation and Impact

May 30, 2025 – The Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI) at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) recently hosted a pivotal meeting with the Vice Chancellor, Professor Pauline Byakika-Kibwika, to discuss the faculty’s progress, aspirations, and challenges. The productive session, moderated by the Dean of Faculty, Dr. Evarist Nabaasa, showcased the vibrant energy and innovative spirit within the FCI.

Dr. Nabaasa opened the meeting by providing a comprehensive background of the faculty, setting the stage for unit heads to present their achievements, outline future plans, detail current challenges, and propose viable solutions. The presentations highlighted a range of accomplishments, from groundbreaking research and impactful community projects to significant advancements in curriculum development.
Professor Byakika-Kibwika acknowledged the immense visibility the FCI brings to the university, commending its growing reputation as a hub of technological innovation. She particularly lauded the high employability of the Faculty’s alumni, a testament to the quality and relevance of their programs.

The Vice Chancellor then invited the University engineer , Eng. Achilles Byabashaija to present on the infrastructure achievements and future plans, underscoring the importance of robust facilities to support the Faculty’s ambitions. In a strong show of support, Professor Byakika-Kibwika promised to work closely with relevant government authorities to ensure that the Faculty’s innovations are recognized and adopted, first at national, and later at international standards.
Recognizing the hurdles that often accompany growth, the Vice Chancellor urged the staff to be patient with a few existing challenges, assuring them that she would take these on as her personal responsibility to lobby for funds. She passionately encouraged the faculty to proactively develop income-generating projects, suggesting avenues such as more short courses and rigorous pursuit of grants and external projects. “These are more sustainable in improving the faculty’s activity as we wait on government funding,” she emphasized, highlighting a path toward greater self-sustainability and innovation.

Dr. Nabaasa acknowledged the absence of his deputy, Dr. Angella Musimenta, who was away on official duty, and other staff members on official leave. In a moment of solemn respect, the members present observed a moment of silence for the late Joy Okeyambe, mother of Dr. Debora Natumanya, a poignant reminder of the community and care that binds the faculty.
The meeting concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and a shared vision for the Faculty of Computing and Informatics to continue its trajectory of excellence, innovation, and impactful contributions to society.
