Pharmaceutical Science combines a broad range of scientific subjects that are important for the discovery, development and manufacture of drugs and therapies. Growth in the pharmaceutical industry sector in Uganda has more than tripled over the last 20 years. Therefore there is need to provide the pharmaceutical industry, research and academic institutions with well-trained scientists with a sound background in the pharmaceutical sciences. We propose the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical sciences, a three-year interdisciplinary program, involving both theoretical and practical training, aimed at producing scientists with the relevant expertise for research and development in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry sectors. We envisage that the main career opportunities for these graduates are in the pharmaceutical and related industries and in the academia. The proposed B.Sc in Pharmaceutical Sciences degree will not qualify graduates for license as pharmacists, thus students pursuing this degree will be exempted from the core professional pharmacy practice courses. The program adopts a competency-based approach and has been developed using current best practices in development of curricula.

The programme is housed in the Faculty of Medicine and draws on the expertise from the departments of Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Physiology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology. For the service courses; Development Studies, Computer Skills and Communication Skills, expertise is drawn from the faculty of Development Studies and the Institute of Computer Science. The Program is administered under the close coordination with the departments of Pharmacy and Pharmacology. The program also draws on expertise from the pharmaceutical industry and research organizations through part-time lecturers; and visiting lecturers from other universities.
The facilities for teaching will be available in the departments of Pharmacy and Pharmacology. These facilities, including laboratories, class rooms, a library and an e-Learning Centre, have recently been upgraded with the assistance from the World Bank/Government of Uganda Millennium Sciences Initiative Grant ( MSI/ WB2 /3 /38 / 2010), under a program for “Strengthening and upgrading the undergraduate degree program in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST)”. Through the Grant, the departments have recruited staff and has acquired some equipment that will be used to train students for the B.Sc in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
