About Software Incubation & Innovations Unit

The Software incubation and Innovation Unit (SIIU) was initiated in 2013 by the Faculty of Computing and Informatics with a mandate to:

  1. Develop in-house software for Mbarara University of Science and Technology
  2. Develop commercial software for sale to organizations
  3. Nurture software innovations developed by students at the faculty.

The SIIU has had major successes and achievements in development of in-house software that include:

  1. Development of Student Academic Records and Management Systems (SARMS) that was actively in use by the university from 2008-2016. SARMS is still in active use as a legacy system for records archived during that period.
  2. Development of the MUST timetabling system which the academic registrar department uses for timetabling (2016-todate)
  3. Development of the MUST Asset Management System used by university administrators to manage the university assets (2018-todate)
  4. Development of the Staff ID generation system used by the academic registrar department (2020- todate) to generate staff IDS.

The SIIU has also been at the fore front of nurturing student innovations developed by students at the faculty. SIIU organizes the annual FCI awards where student innovations are nurtured. More than 100 student innovations have been nurtured through this process.
