Uganda Association of Physiotherapy Commemorates World Physiotherapy Day in Mbarara

In the heart of Uganda, the Uganda Association of Physiotherapy commemorated World Physiotherapy Day in Mbarara District. This event was held in collaboration with Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital and Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST).

The theme for the day was “Back Pain,” and excitement filled the air at MUST as professionals, students, and experts gathered to share knowledge, showcase innovations, and foster collaboration around this pressing issue.

During the session, students, primarily those in Year III and IV were paired with mentors, , to assess patients with back pain, and learn more about its management. Year II students were involved in records management, ensuring order at the event.

The day’s activities included back exercises, aerobics sessions, and a specialized back pain clinic, all designed to educate attendees on effective strategies for managing and preventing back pain. Participants engaged in invigorating aerobics, guided by experienced instructors (both MUST alumni and current students), while learning about the importance of physical activity in maintaining spinal health.

According to Mr. Othieno Lastone, a Year IV Physiotherapy student, they learned about assessment of back pain, the role of physiotherapists in its management, and the rehabilitative care of patients with this challenge.

Faculty members along with Atwongyeire Night, a MUST alumni and senior physiotherapist at MRRH were part of the team that sensitized the public on how to manage back pain through self-management and back exercises.

The Head of Department, Mr. Herman Kazibwe, thanked the national physiotherapy association for choosing Mbarara District to host this national commemoration. He acknowledged the support rendered by the Uganda government through the Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital and MUST.

We thank the Faculty of Medicine, specifically the Department of Physiotherapy, for giving back to the community. This aligns well with the university’s mission, which states: “To provide equitable quality and relevant education and research with particular emphasis on Science and Technology and its application to community development.”
