The 31st graduation ceremony at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) was marked by a significant presence: the mace bearer. This ceremonial symbol of authority and tradition, was carried by Ms. Isabel Uwera, a first-year student from the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology pursuing a Bachelor Science in Civil Engineering.

The mace, a long, decorated staff, has deep historical roots. It was originally used as a weapon by medieval kings and bishops to symbolize their power and authority. Over time, its purpose evolved to become a ceremonial object, representing the institution’s authority and the academic achievements of its graduates.

Isabel Uwera, in her first year at MUST, was chosen to fulfill the prestigious role of mace bearer. She expressed her gratitude and humility in being selected for this honor, stating, “I am humbled to be a mace bearer in my first year. It is such a great opportunity that has given me a chance to boost my self-confidence and the urge to take up responsibilities while at MUST.”
Her selection as the mace bearer highlighted her commitment to the university and its values. By carrying the mace, Isabel became a symbol of her generation, representing the future of MUST and the aspirations of its students.
