At every university graduation, few symbols carry as much weight and dignity as the mace a powerful emblem of institutional authority, heritage, and academic pride. At Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), the mace stands as a visual reminder of the university’s autonomy, scholarly integrity, and commitment to excellence in education.
During the 32nd Graduation Ceremony of MUST, held on October 25, 2025, this iconic symbol once again took center stage, leading the grand Chancellor’s procession to the graduation grounds at the Kihumuro Main Campus. The mace, polished and gleaming under the lights, signified the formal opening of the ceremony, an enduring tradition that connects the university to centuries of global academic customs.
This year, the honor of carrying the mace was bestowed upon Ms. Judith Shidishi Alina from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics, pursuing a Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT II). Her selection as Mace Bearer is a recognition of her calm character, composure, discipline, innovation, and being an all-round student.
In university traditions worldwide, the mace is more than an ornamental staff; it embodies the authority of the institution’s Governing Council, Vice Chancellor, and Chancellor. Its presence at ceremonial functions, especially graduations, represents the lawful power under which degrees are conferred. When the mace is placed before the Chancellor, it signals that the university is in session and that the proceedings carry the weight of academic legitimacy.

For Mbarara University of Science and Technology, a university built on the pillars of service, integrity, and excellence, the mace reflects both continuity and progress. It serves as a bridge between tradition and modernity, connecting the foundational vision of the university’s early years with its forward-looking spirit as a center for innovation, research, and community impact.
As Ms. Judith Shindishi Alina carried the mace with pride during the 32nd Graduation Ceremony, she represented not only her faculty but also the aspirations of a new generation of scientists, innovators, and thinkers who are ready to shape Uganda’s digital future. Her role underscores the responsibility of every graduate to uphold the dignity, authority, and values symbolized by the mace in their professional and personal journeys.
