Esteemed colleagues, I present to you a profile of remarkable dedication and impactful leadership within our field. Dr. Musa Kayondo has distinguished himself through a meticulous ascent in academia, culminating in his recent promotion to Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mbarara University of Science and Technology. Beyond his academic achievements, Dr. Kayondo, often referred to as Chief, has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to addressing critical healthcare disparities in Uganda. Recognizing the significant burden of Urogynecological conditions among women with limited access to care, he has proactively sought financial resources and spearheaded the establishment of a mobile clinic initiative. This impactful work has extended vital medical services to underserved populations in districts including Lira, Nakaseke, Mbarara, and Kanungu. Dr. Kayondo’s unwavering dedication to restoring the dignity and well-being of these women has earned him widespread recognition as a transformative figure in their lives. Let us now explore the journey and motivations of Dr. Musa Kayondo, a respected colleague whose work serves as a compelling example of impactful engagement within our profession.
Who is Musa Kayondo?
Associate professor Musa Kayondo is an Obstetrician and Gynecologist in the Faculty of Medicine, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH), South Western Uganda.
He is an Alumnus of MUST where he obtained a Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB), Masters of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and a PhD in Medicine. He has a Fellowship in Urogynecology and Female Pelvic Floor Reconstructive Surgery from The Bay Area Pelvic Surgery Center in San Francisco, California, USA. He is a fellow of the East, Central and Southern African College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ECSCOG).

Prof Kayondo has risen through the ranks at MUST Obstetrics and Gynecology department from Assistant Lecturer (2010-2013) to Lecturer (2013-2021), Senior Lecturer (2021-2025), and currently Associate Professor. He is the current Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology since 2018 and the director of the Urogynecology and Female pelvic Floor Reconstructive Fellowship program at MUST, the first of its kind in East and Central Africa. He is a member of the Faculty of Medicine Appointment and Promotions Committee, and the Faculty Research Committee in charge of reviewing PhD proposals. He is also a past Vice President of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Uganda (2019-2021).


He is a member of numerous professional bodies such as Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council (UMDPC), Uganda Medical Association (UMA), Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Uganda (AOGU), Fistula Technical Working Group of Uganda, Africa Urogynecology Society, and ECSCOG. Prof Kayondo is a founding board member for International non-profit organizations dealing in women’s health like Medicine for Humanity and Medlend.


Prof Kayondo is a clinician for the last 22 years at various levels and hospitals. He was an Intern Doctor at Mulago National Referral Hospital and Masaka Regional Referral Hospital (2003-2004), Medical Officer at Nakaseke General Hospital (2005-2010), Senior House Officer in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (2007-2010), and Consultant Obstetrician/ Gynecologist at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital from 2011. He is a senior Urogynecologist and Female genital fistula surgeon for the last 15 years where he has performed over 1500 fistula surgeries through camps and routine surgeries in Uganda at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, Nakaseke General Hospital, Bwindi Community Hospital, Lira Regional Referral Hospital, Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, and Masafu General Hospital in Busia District. He also conducts camps in Republic of South Sudan at Yambio State Hospital and Juba Teaching Hospital.

Prof Kayondo has trained and mentored many students at Undergraduate, postgraduate, Fellowship, and PhD levels at MUST and other medical universities within Uganda and beyond. He has trained and mentored over 1600 medical doctors, 150 obstetricians/gynecologists, 5 urogynecologists, and also supervised 5 PhD students. He has been an external examiner at Kabale University, Kampala International University, and Juba University (South Sudan). He is the founder of the Urogynecology and Female. Pelvic Floor Surgery Fellowship at MUST, which is the 1st in East and Central Africa.

As a researcher, Prof Kayondo has published over 50 peer reviewed papers in reputable journals particularly in the field of urogynecology and fistula surgery. He has a number of innovations in gynecology with the most notable one being “vaginal reconstruction method in girls born without vaginas in a resource limited setting”.

He is a reviewer for many journals, including BMC urology, BMC women’s Health, IUJ, IJWH, and PAMJ. He has presented scholarly work at locally, nationally and international conferences. He has attracted grants to MUST and MRRH notably the extension of the gynecology ward from a 10-bed ward to 45-bed ward.

Socially, Prof Kayondo is a staunch football fan and supporter. Locally he is a lifelong supporter of Sports Club Villa and a board Member for the Bulemeezi County Football team in the Buganda Masaaza Cup.
