Prof. Margriet Greidanus, MD, CCFP-EM is an Emergency Medicine specialist and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Prof. Margriet Greidanus is visiting Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) to support the Department of Emergency Medicine, Faculty of Medicine in the following areas;
- Clinical teaching to the Emergency Medicine residents
- Providing ultrasound training
- Supervising residents in the Emergency Medicine Department
- Supporting local Emergency Medicine staff.
Dr. Margriet Greidanus has an interest in medical education and is currently, the coordinator for the CCFP-EM resident simulation at the University of Calgary.
About Emergency Medicine
Emergency Medicine (EM) is a rapidly expanding and stimulating specialty concentrated upon the urgent initial diagnosis and treatment of acute illness and injury. The speciality of EM is recognized internationally and was started in USA in the 1950’s when physicians realized that the initial management of accidents and emergencies needed to be supervised by senior doctors to improve the outcome of the first few critical hours of a patient’s emergency treatment.
This discipline concentrates on the urgent diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury to improve the outcome of the first few critical hours of a patient’s emergency treatment.
In 2009, The African Federation for Emergency Medicine (AFEM) was founded to bring together Emergency Medicine Specialist societies from South Africa, Tanzania, Botswana and Ethiopia.
Ministry of Health recognized the need for trained specialists to improve Emergency care in Uganda due to rising disease burden from injury, heart disease, stroke and Road Traffic accidents. Therefore, investment in Emergency Medicine through development of emergency medical training and establishment of National Ambulance System is key in coordinating and initiating treatment, prevention of injury and illness at village and health centre as well as transfer of critically ill patients to Emergency Departments at the District and Referral Hospitals.
