
On October 29,2024, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) and the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) embarked on a strategic partnership aimed at driving innovation and research in Uganda. The partnership was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Vice Chancellor of MUST, Professor Pauline Byakika-Kibwika, and the Director General of NARO, Dr. Yona Baguma.

Key Points from the Partnership:
• Shared Vision: Both institutions share a common vision of advancing science and technology to address critical societal challenges.
• Leveraging Strengths: The partnership will leverage the expertise and resources of both organizations to enhance research capacity and innovation.
• Promoting Agricultural Research: NARO’s extensive research capabilities in agriculture will be integrated with MUST’s academic programs to foster agricultural development and food security.
• Exploring Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research: The partnership will explore opportunities in biomedical and pharmaceutical research, contributing to healthcare advancements in Uganda.
• Driving Innovation: The collaboration aims to stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship, positioning Uganda as a hub for technological advancements.

Joint Steering Committee:
A Joint Steering Committee has been established to oversee the implementation of the partnership. The committee comprises representatives from both institutions and will be responsible for:
• Developing a strategic plan for the partnership.
• Monitoring progress and evaluating outcomes.
• Facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing.
• Identifying and addressing challenges.

The committee will meet within 30 days to develop a detailed action plan and seek the guidance of the Minister of Science and Technology.
This strategic partnership between MUST and NARO marks a significant step towards realizing Uganda’s vision of becoming an innovation-led economy. By combining their strengths and resources, the two institutions are poised to make a substantial impact on the country’s development.
