Hope gained at MUST-MRRH Urology camp

Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), together with Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH), held a five-day urology camp from October 13 to October 17, 2025.

The camp was organized by the MUST Urology Unit as a five-day mission dedicated to tackling the backlog of complex urological cases and providing care for a group of long-waiting patients.

According to the Head of the Unit, Dr. Marvin Mwesigwa, this was more than just a medical intervention; it was a promise kept. These were patients who had been on a lengthy waiting list, many of whom required specialized surgery for conditions like urethral stricture a painful and debilitating narrowing of the urethra where routine services were simply not enough.

“These men have waited a long time,” Dr. Mwesigwa noted, his voice reflecting a sense of urgent purpose. “They were selected specifically from our backlog because they required complex, recommended surgery. We are here to change their lives.”

The camp was made possible through a generous full-board sponsorship, which covered everything from the patients’ stay and meals to the specialized medical supplies. This critical support allowed the focus to remain entirely on the healing mission.

For five intense days, the operating theaters and recovery rooms became centers of remarkable collaboration. The local MUST and MRRH team a dedicated cohort of surgeons and specialists were joined by three visiting urologists. This powerful team of experts worked side-by-side, sharing knowledge, mastering intricate procedures, and systematically addressing the complex cases.

The emotional climax of the camp came swiftly. By Day 5, the results were nothing short of miraculous: 95% of the 16 men who benefited had fully recovered. Their long-held fear and pain were replaced with smiles of gratitude and the relief of restored health. For these 15 men, a life of discomfort and uncertainty had been traded for a clear path to wellness and dignity.

Dr. Mwesigwa was quick to share the praise, his appreciation extending to every hand that made the miracle possible: the visiting professors who brought their expertise, the diligent Nurses who provided round-the-clock care, and the committed MUST and MRRH Doctors who poured their hearts and skills into the effort.

This second Urology Camp reaffirmed MUST’s commitment to not only training Uganda’s future medical leaders but also to providing immediate, impactful service to its community, turning long waits into swift and successful recoveries.

To the hands that served, the minds that guided, and the hearts that cared your diligence turned a long-held backlog of suffering into a quick fountain of restored health. This success, witnessed in the eyes of 16 men, is the truest measure of teamwork. Thank you for proving that through unified purpose, healing is swift and hope is absolute. Said Prof. Pauline Byakika- Kibwika the Vice Chancellor MUST.
