The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has annually held medical camps for the past six years led by Dr. Musa Kayondo and Prof. Verena Geissbuher from the University of Basel Switzerland and St. Claraspital in collaboration with the Women’s health in Uganda focusing on pelvic floor Disorders. In this year, this the 5th Urogynecology Camp conducted in different hospitals including Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) and will be conducting another camp which starts from 16th to 20th December 2024 and screening to start on the 14th and 15th December 2024.
The Urogynecology team is composed of Specialists both Surgeons and Anesthesia, Urogyn- fellows, Residents both Anesthesia and Obsgyn, Theatre Nurses, Ward nurses, Camp Coordinator, Data clerk, Driver, Physiotherapist, a member from the communication crew and a Technician.
Obstetric fistula is a medical condition that results from obstructed labor with no medical attention which leads women to have raptured uterus and post-partum bleeding among other effects. Obstetric fistula is mostly preventable when the right C-section is conducted.
These conditions are; Urine incontinence, stool incontinence, Genital Prolapse, Tears during Delivery, Fistula and Genital Tract Abnormalities. Fistula is common among teenage mothers because of their immature Pelvic organ and also among mothers who use traditional birth attendants.
To identify the patients, announcements are sent to the communities i.e. radios, churches etc.
Patients are given free surgery, care, meals and transport refund.
These camps also;
Train MUST postgraduate students and fellows in Urogynecological surgeries under the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
They currently have trained 03 fellows and 02 who are still under training.
This team has helped in restoring women’s health and enabling them get a chance to live normal fulfilling lives.
