You are invited to a Grand Round hosted by the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Emergency Medicine.
Topic of the day: Responding to Mass Casualty Incidents (MCI): From the Roadside to Recovery
This will be Moderated by: Dr. Tracy Walczynski, Emergency Physician and SEED Global Health Clinical Educator, MRRH Emergency Department
Why this grand round?
Mass casualty incidents (MCIs) present complex challenges to emergency responders, healthcare systems, and communities. These events, which involve a sudden influx of patients far exceeding the capacity of local medical facilities, require effective coordination, rapid decision-making, and resource allocation to minimize loss of life and ensure appropriate care. This presentation will provide an overview of the key concepts and strategies involved in managing MCIs, focusing on the principles of triage, incident command, and requirement for whole of hospital collaboration.
The emergency department team will use a case to demonstrate how the emergency department changes its approach when there is a surge of critical patients. We will then explore the theory behind the prehospital and hospital phases of responding to a mass casualty incident, and discuss some of the challenges that we face in the local context. Lastly, the team will provide you with some knowledge and skills on how to approach the scene should you be in the unfortunate position as the first healthcare worker on site. We will give you the opportunity to use standardized protocols for quick and efficient treatment to ensure order can be made out of the chaos.
