Overview
This Grand Rounds session will focus on GLAUCOMA. “THE SILENT THIEF OF THE SIGHT.” This will be led by Dr. Sam M Ruvuma a Lecturer in the Department of
Ophthalmology, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Vitreoretinal surgeon at Mbarara University of Science and Technology Department.
Glaucoma is a serious eye condition where the nerve which connects the eye to the brain becomes permanently damaged. It is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and
also at the Mbarara University and Referral Hospital Eye Centre (MURHEC), where it accounts for 14.4% of all cases of blindness. Often referred to as ‘the silent thief of sight’, glaucoma
progresses without noticeable symptoms, with many patients only realizing their vision loss once the disease has advanced significantly. Therefore, increasing awareness about glaucoma is
crucial to ensure early diagnosis and effective management.”
Target Audience:
This session is intended for Medical students, general practitioners, and other healthcare professionals involved in the eye Management.
Learning Objectives/ Grand round purpose
To equip medical students of MUST and the surrounding communities with awareness and knowledge about the Glaucoma. “The Silent Thief of the Sight.”
To hopefully, contribute to early referral and diagnosis and improved outcomes.

1. Introduction – Dr. Zalwango Teddy: – 2nd year resident
• What is glaucoma? – Its clinical significance
• Classification of glaucoma
2. Pathogenesis, risk factors and clinical presentation of glaucoma: – Dr Paul Lubega: 3rd year resident.
3. Management of glaucoma: Investigations and treatment. – Dr Teddy Kwaga Ophthalmologist/Glaucoma specialist.
4. Discussion (Questions& Answers), and closing remarks – Dr Abel Ebong: Ophthalmologist
Closing Remarks: Dr. Sam M Ruvuma will summarize the key takeaways from the session and provide concluding remarks.
