Grand Round – AI in Healthcare

Team Leader: Prof. Leo Anthony Celi

Overview:

This Grand Round session will explore the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare, with particular emphasis on epistemic humility; the recognition of the limitations of knowledge, particularly when developing and deploying clinical AI systems. As AI and data science become increasingly central to modern medicine, it is imperative for our medical students to critically engage with both the technological possibilities and the philosophical foundations that underpin responsible and equitable innovation in healthcare.

This will be chaired Dr. Richard Kimera (PhD), a lecturer at Mbarara University of Science and Technology Department of Information Technology.

Target Audience: This session is intended for to all Healthcare professionals.

Learning Objectives:

We believe that Prof. Celi’s global experience in clinical AI research and capacity-building initiatives in low-resource settings will provide invaluable insight to our students. His session would aim to:

Unpack the practical and ethical considerations in building AI systems for healthcare.

Emphasize the importance of epistemic humility in medical practice and research.

Encourage interdisciplinary approaches to solving healthcare challenges.
