Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) together with Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) is excited to announce the commissioning ceremony of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) which is the largest one in the East African Region.This will take place on the 20th November 2025 at the National commemoration of World Prematurity Day at Mbarara RRH. Starting at 8:00am in the morning.
This was started after a Funding from the WORLD BANK GRANT TO MINISTRY OF HEALTH THROUGH UCREPP (Uganda COVID-19 response and Emergency Preparedness Project. The proposal was written in 2017 by Dr. Kumbakumba Elias, a senior Lecturer at the Department of Paediatric & Child Health at Mbarara University and Submitted to MoH with Dr. Celestine Barigye. Construction began in May 2024. The Guest of Honor shall be the Speaker of Parliament Hon Anita Among.
NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) is a specialized hospital unit that provides critical medical care for newborn infants who are seriously ill, premature, or have other medical problems.
The NICU will be MUST’s training Centre for both undergraduate and postgraduate students in Neonatology and a Fellowship in Neonatology that shall eventually be established and hosted at MUST.
The newly constructed NICU structure includes training facilities for pre-service and in-service health professionals, and will also be a Centre for research in Newborn Care in the East African region.
