Ameloblastoma “Odontogenic Jaw Tumor”-Grand Round

Join us for a Grand Round titled Ameloblastoma “Odontogenic Jaw Tumor.” This session will be led by Dr. Arubaku Wilfred, a Senior lecturer and Head of department Dental Surgery at Mbarara University of Science and Technology and Mbarara Regional Referral hospital respectively.
Target Audience: This session is intended for Medical students, Dentists, general practitioners, healthcare professionals involved in the care of the teeth and the entire community.

Problem/ Identified gap:
Ameloblastoma “Odontogenic Jaw Tumor” histologically affects mainly the mandible with a rare, benign but aggressive jaw tumor. It causes painless swelling, loose teeth, and facial deformity because the stroma lacks the properties of dental mesenchyme.

Despite the similarities, it is intriguing that ameloblastoma still displays a distinctive clinically invasive and aggressive growth pattern.
About 80% of the time, it develops in your lower jaw in the space behind your back teeth (molars). Due to naivety and limited healthcare facilities, ameloblastoma patients in developing countries often present with massively grown lesions before seeking care.

Diagnosis and treatment:
Diagnosis involves imaging and biopsy. Treatment requires surgical removal, ranging from conservative curettage to radical resection, with reconstruction if needed. Recurrence is common, so complete excision and long-term follow-up are essential. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are rarely used but may help in recurrent or inoperable cases.

Program Outline:
• Moderator: Dr. Arubaku Wilfred
• Case Presentations
• Closing Remarks: Dr. Arubaku Wilfred will summarize the key takeaways from the session and provide concluding remarks.
We encourage active participation during the Q&A session following the presentations.
