Following a successful training program in Boston, Massachusetts, a collaborative partnership between the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Global Health (CGH) and Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) has brought their expertise to Uganda.
In July 2024, five staff members from MUST underwent a two-week nurse leadership training and trainer of trainees program in Boston. Led by Ms. Annet Kembabazi and Ms. Hanifah Nantongo, under the mentorship of Ms. Mary Sebert, the program focused on enhancing leadership skills, .



On October 22, 2024, the MUST trained individuals from MGH, together with Ms. Mary Sebert, are conducting a five day training at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital. This training is specifically targeting ward in-charges, senior principal nursing officers, and principal nursing officers. A notable attendee is Ms. Josephine Odoyo, the project director of the One Stop Prep Delivery Project at the Kenyan Medical Research Institute – Research Care and Training Program, Lumumba Kisumu Hospital.

The training aims to equip nurses at MRRH with essential leadership skills that are often overlooked in their traditional training. By focusing on empowerment, delegation, accountability, and reflective practice, advocay, communication skills, conflict resolution, managing up,across and down among others. The program seeks to enhance the capabilities of these healthcare professionals and improve the quality of care provided to patients.

This initiative is a testament to the power of international collaboration and the importance of investing in the development of nursing leadership. As the training continues over the next five days, it is expected to have a lasting impact on the healthcare landscape and more especially for nurse leaders in Mbarara and beyond.
