Dr. Murungi, a dedicated medical professional and passionate advocate for healthcare innovation, swiftly responded to an in-flight medical emergency, successfully resuscitating two unconscious passengers.
His decisive intervention and medical expertise were commended by the flight crew and fellow travelers, underscoring the exceptional caliber of MUST graduates.
Dr. Murungi’s journey is a testament to the transformative education and values instilled at Mbarara University of Science and Technology. A graduate of our esteemed Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery program (2017-2022), Dr. Murungi distinguished himself as a highly motivated and engaged student. His commitment to academic excellence was complemented by an active involvement in numerous co-curricular and professional development opportunities.
During his time at MUST, Dr. Murungi demonstrated exceptional leadership as the Editor-in-Chief of the Mbarara University Medical Journal, fostering a platform for student research and scholarly discourse. He also served as the Project Manager for MEDXMENTOR, a vital initiative dedicated to providing mentorship and guidance to aspiring healthcare professionals.
Driven by a profound sense of service, Dr. Murungi actively contributed to community health initiatives, including organizing outreach programs like CAMP BUKEDEA, which provided essential medical services to underserved populations. His dedication extended to the frontlines of public health crises, volunteering during the COVID-19 pandemic and participating in Ebola case management efforts.

Dr. Murungi’s pursuit of knowledge and innovation is further evidenced by his engagement in research from his undergraduate years. He secured research grants, presented his work at national and international conferences, and contributed to peer-reviewed publications, showcasing his early commitment to advancing medical knowledge.
His involvement in diverse organizations, ranging from the Mbarara University Medical Students’ Association to global networks like the Millennium Fellowship and One Health Central and Southern Africa, reflects his collaborative spirit and his understanding of the interconnectedness of health challenges.

Dr. Jonathan Murungi’s recent act of heroism is a powerful embodiment of the values we champion at MUST: dedication, expertise, and a commitment to making a positive impact on society. Currently, he is embarking on clinical observership at the University of Cologne, Germany, for 2 weeks funded by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases ( ESCMID)

We celebrate his accomplishments and eagerly anticipate his future contributions to the medical field. His story serves as an inspiration to our current students and a source of immense pride for the entire MUST community.
