On Monday March 17 th , 2025, a team led by the Vice Chancellor of Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), Prof. Pauline Byakika-Kibwika, paid a courtesy call on the founding Vice Chancellor of MUST, Prof. Frederick I.B. Kayanja, at his residence in Luzira, Kampala. The delegation included the Chairman of the Convocation of MUST Dr. Medard Bitekyerezo, the Vice Chairman of the Convocation of MUST Mr. Solomon Agum, the Dean of Faculty of Medicine Associate Prof. Joseph Ngonzi, the Convocation of MUST Representation for Central Region Ms. Grace Kimbugwe and the University Communications Officer, Ms. Angella Nakato Muyingo.

Upon arrival, Prof. Kayanja together with his lovely wife warmly welcomed the team and expressed immense gratitude for visit. The atmosphere was quickly lightened by humorous anecdotes from Prof. Kayanja about his life, spanning his educational journey to his tenure as Vice Chancellor. These stories not only broke the ice but also fostered a relaxed environment conducive to meaningful discussion.

Prof. Kayanja shared with the team the vision that led to the establishment of the University, application of science and technology for community transformation. He also shared invaluable wisdom about sustaining and enhancing the legacy of MUST. Listening attentively, Prof. Byakika-Kibwika expressed her gratitude for his insights and encouraged him to continue offering his counsel, referring to him as a father figure. Prof. Kayanja graciously accepted this request, reinforcing the bond between the University’s leadership and its founding father.
Mr. Agum shared on the growth that has transpired in the University since Prof. Kayanja left. He highlighted the growth in student numbers, academic programmes, research grants and the full operationalization of the Kihumuro Main campus. Mr. Agum stated that one of the major challenges that persist is infrastructure.

The conversation transitioned to upcoming initiatives, particularly the Convocation Dinner scheduled for April 12, 2025, at Silver Springs Hotel, Bugolobi, Kampala. This event aims to unite alumni and raise funds to support the University’s infrastructure needs, elevating the MUST flag higher. Mr. Agum enthusiastically shared details about the dinner, which will feature tickets priced at 120,000 UGX per person and went ahead to invite Prof. Kayanja to grace the occasion as the Chief Guest. Prof. Kayanja pledged his support for this initiative, highlighting the importance of alumni engagement in advancing the University’s mission. He went ahead to invite all alumni of MUST to join hands together and support the University, emphasizing that small efforts when combined can build great things!

Prof. Kayanja also expressed curiosity about the future plans for the Medical School, prompting Associate Prof. Ngonzi to share insights into its development and growth. Prof. Byakika-Kibwika provided additional context, discussing the challenges ahead and potential solutions. The dialogue was invigorated by Dr. Bitekyerezo’s challenge to support these initiatives, a responsibility he embraced with enthusiasm.



In keeping with African cultural traditions, the MUST team presented gifts to Prof. Kayanja, paying homage to their founding Vice Chancellor. This gesture symbolized respect and appreciation for his contributions to the University. The visit turned into a wonderful reunion,strengthening the ties between the current leadership and the foundational pillars of MUST.

Overall, the courtesy call served as a reminder of the enduring legacy of Prof. Kayanja and the collaborative spirit that continues to drive Mbarara University of Science and Technology forward.
