A heartfelt mission: a second chance to children; UHI, MRRH and MUST join hands

The Uganda Heart Institute (UHI) recently held a transformative Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Camp at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH). This life-changing initiative aimed to provide vital cardiac care to children in need while simultaneously fostering valuable skills exchange among healthcare professionals.
A team of dedicated specialists, including renowned Pediatric cardiovascular surgeons Dr. Okello Michael, Dr. Muhoozi R. Mbagga, and Dr. Ariaka Herbert, joined forces to perform critical PDA closure ligations. These procedures offer hope to children born with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), a congenital heart defect that can lead to serious life threatening complications and death.

As surgeries commenced, a sense of anticipation filled the air. Young patients, like the curious child who drew pictures moments before his procedure, awaited their chance at a healthier future. The skilled surgeons, working with a team of dedicated intensivists, nurses and paediatric cardiologists, worked tirelessly to repair tiny hearts.
Dr. Judith Namuyonga, a Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist, at Uganda Heart Institute, emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and timely intervention for PDA. She highlighted the potential for complete recovery when treated effectively, while also acknowledging the risks associated with delayed care.
