TOPIC: Sickle Cell Disease
Overview
This Joint Grand Round session will focus on Sickle Cell Disease and Pregnancy. It shall be led by Dr. Barnabas Atwiine, the Paediatric Hematologist and Oncologist, Lecturer, Department of
Paediatric and Child Health, MUST.
With improved survival of children born with sickle cell disease (SCD), an increasing number of affected girls are reaching reproductive age and desire to start families of their own. While this is
a welcome milestone in the progress of SCD care, pregnancy in women with SCD requires specialized, multidisciplinary management to optimize maternal and fetal outcomes.
Successful outcomes depend on appropriate preconception counseling, careful antenatal surveillance, evidence-based medical management, and coordinated obstetric and hematologic care.
This Grand Round aims to:
1. Review the basic pathophysiology and clinical features of sickle cell disease.
2. Discuss the maternal and fetal risks associated with pregnancy in women with SCD.
3. Outline preconception counseling and risk assessment strategies.
4. Describe evidence-based antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum management approaches.
5. Highlight the importance of multidisciplinary care in improving outcomes.
The session will also equip clinicians with practical guidance for managing pregnancy in women with SCD in resource-limited settings.
