Overview
This Grand Rounds session will focus on Diabetes mellitus in pregnancy. This will be led by Dr. Hillary Aheisibwe, Associate Consultant- OBGYN/ Fertility Specialist at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
Diabetes mellitus in pregnancy is one of the most common medical disorders complicating pregnancy. Globally, it complicates 5–20% of all pregnancies. However, the prevalence has been on the rise due to rising obesity and delayed childbearing.
Pregnancy is a diabetogenic state characterized by progressive insulin resistance from placental hormones. Poor glycemic control is associated with adverse maternal outcomes such as pre-eclampsia, polyhydramnios, operative delivery, and postpartum hemorrhage, as well as fetal and neonatal complications including congenital anomalies, macrosomia, shoulder dystocia, neonatal hypoglycemia, respiratory distress, and stillbirth. Universal screening, early diagnosis, lifestyle modification, appropriate pharmacologic therapy, close antenatal surveillance, and postpartum follow-up are essential to optimize maternal and perinatal outcomes.
