This Grand Rounds session will focus on the HOCUS POCUS – Ultrasound in the Emergency Department. This will be led by Dr.Tracy Walczynski, Emergency Physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine
Overview
Ultrasound has become an indispensable tool in the emergency department, facilitated by technological advancements that have made machines more portable and affordable. This shift allows clinicians to perform bedside assessments, guiding critical patient care decisions in real time. Ultrasound has evolved into a subspecialty skill within emergency medicine training, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and procedural safety. However, it is not a substitute for formal imaging modalities; understanding its limitations is essential to prevent misdiagnosis and suboptimal management. This presentation will explore how bedside ultrasound can facilitate rapid decision-making in emergency settings, while emphasizing the need for proper training and awareness of its constraints.
