Naturapolyceutics: A Holistic Approach for Utilizing Local Raw Materials for Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
Naturapolyceutics is a word derived from natural polymers and pharmaceutics. It is defined as the art, science, and the technology of utilizing natural polymers for the design and development of drug delivery systems. Due to their eco-friendliness, low toxicity, renewability, flexibility to modification, biodegradability and low cost, the interest in valorization of natural polymers for drug delivery is increasing. Their application in pharmaceutical product development is diverse including emulsification, disintegration, suspension, controlled release, film coating, solubilization, bio-adhesion, gelling, thickening/ viscosity modulation, mechanical strengthening, encapsulation, etc.
Therefore, in this scientific presentation and interaction, the department of pharmaceutical sciences will:

delve into the trends and emerging areas in the science of naturapolyceutics,

disseminate studies conducted on our local natural polymers in Uganda (most especially MUST – Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and PHARMBIOTRAC) for drug delivery,

and dissect the need/ potential for technology transfer of these polymers into pharmaceutical industries to strengthen local manufacturing.
