Team Leader: Rodgers Charles Kabugo (MSc. Pharmaceutical Analysis)
Overview:
This Grand Rounds session will focus on Bridging the Gap-Standardizing Herbal Medicine for integration into Uganda’s Health Care System. This will be led by Rodgers Charles Kabugo a student of MSc. Pharmaceutical Analysis at Mbarara University of Science and Technology department of Pharmacy.
Target Audience:
This session is intended for Medical students, general practitioners, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care.
Abstract/Details:
Despite the widespread use and documented efficacy of many herbal medicines in Uganda, medical doctors remain hesitant to freely prescribe them to patients. This reluctance stems primarily from a critical lack of standardization. Without standardized dosages, identified active ingredients, and verified quality control protocols, these remedies exist as unpredictable and unquantifiable products. Doctors, trained in evidence-based medicine, cannot confidently prescribe a treatment whose potency, purity, and safety may vary drastically between batches.
Therefore, the central barrier to integration is not necessarily a question of efficacy, but rather the absence of a reliable framework that transforms traditional herbs into standardized, quantifiable medicines that fit within the analytical and pharmacological models of modern healthcare. Until this standardization gap is bridged, herbal medicines will remain outside the normal prescription practices of Ugandan physicians.
