Climate change refers to long-term shifts and alterations in temperature and weather patterns, primarily caused by human activities. Such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes, which release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. According to the United Nations (UN),
These gases trap heat, leading to global warming and triggering a range of changes including more frequent and severe weather events like storms, heat waves and droughts. It is estimated that climate change will cause approximately 250,000 additional deaths per year from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea, and heat stress alone between 2030 and 2050. (WHO)
Extreme weather, conflict and economic upheaval saw close to 100 million people in Africa suffer from food insecurity in 2020 (a near 40% increase from the previous year).
WHO emphasizes that climate change poses significant risks to human health impacting water and food security, air quality and increasing the spread of diseases. Vulnerable people, the poor in low income countries face or will face the devastating effects of climate change.
