Painless delivery: A myth or reality in Uganda? Labor pains are one of the most excruciating pains that can ever be experienced by parturients. Labor analgesia/pain relief is one of the highly sought-after services by mothers during labor and in preparation for labor to alleviate this pain. Its utilization in high income countries range from 50-90% in obstetric units versus 1.3-12% in low- income countries.
A painless delivery is actually achievable by utilizing various forms both pharmacological and non-pharmacological even in the Ugandan setting. A descriptive study done in Uganda demonstrated that up to 87.7% of parturients desired analgesia in labor but awareness was low at 7%. This brought out the need for this service to be availed in our setting.
A painless delivery can be a reality. Let’s educate the mothers and caregivers about the various options, benefits and risks to increase awareness, utilization of this service and improve overall labor experience.
