MUST launches groundbreaking Alzheimer’s and Dementia Research Program

Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), in partnership with Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and University of Texas Health San Antonio (UTHSA), is launching a five-year Alzheimer’s and Dementia Research Training Program (ADRET). This initiative aims to address the critical need for research and training in dementia science, particularly in low and middle-income countries like Uganda.

With over 55 million people worldwide living with dementia, and a projected 250% increase in Alzheimer’s disease cases in sub-Saharan Africa by 2050, there is an urgent need to build research capacity in this region. ADRET will provide sustained mentorship and protected research time to promising researchers, fostering the development of a new generation of scientists dedicated to understanding and addressing the challenges of dementia.

The program is funded by the Alzheimer’s Association and the Global Brain Health Institute. Its launch event will take place on December 9, 2024, at the Las Vegas Hotel in Mbarara. Both in-person and online participation will be available, with the link to be shared shortly.
